This temporary exhibition was created for the 50th anniversary of the European Union, showing some of the achievements from the EIB history.

The challenge to encapsulate and display the diversity of worldwide projects undertaken by the EIB throughout its 50 year history, resulted in the development of a large freestanding structure, to be viewed as a simple floating monolith; this box-like structure created the possibility of multiple exhibition opportunities within one volume, whilst keeping the surrounding space uncluttered and allowing seamless integration into the atrium of Denys Lasdun's famous building.

This hard working monolith enabled us to show the content of an otherwise much larger exhibition within one volume:

  • A 4.5 m long bright yellow glass light box on one side of the monolith showed a wide range of artefacts collected over the years by the bank.
  • Above that showcase we developed, together with the client, a time line of the EIB's history, creating a clear but detailed overview of the different stages, graphically highlighting the most relevant milestones.
  • The other side of the monolith has a flush fitted 50' LCD screen showing around 60 projects of the EIB, with captions (around 5 times more than initially planned).
  • Besides this multimedia show we fitted a static large scale world map that highlighted in which countries the EIB is active, once again, creating a clear but detailed overview of their activities.

As a result a vast amount of information could be displayed with clarity, giving the visitor a highly accessible insight into the wide and varied projects of the European Investment Bank.

This project is nominated for the 2008 Communication & Design Awards, category exhibition design.
